Einstein Never Said This
You may have seen the phrase, “Doing the same thing every day while expecting a different tomorrow is an early sign of mental illness,” circulating on the internet as if it were said by Albert Einstein. However, there is no evidence that Einstein ever made such a statement. Regardless of the evidence, the claim itself appears to be far removed from science.
First, it is impossible to “live the same as yesterday.” Human behavior is extremely difficult to control, and it is likewise impossible to determine that each day is exactly identical.
Second, the use of language is excessively arbitrary. Words such as “different tomorrow” or “early sign of mental illness” can take on completely different meanings depending on interpretation, and they are not self-evident facts in themselves. How, for example, could one determine a “different tomorrow” through double-blind methods, or decide what kind of behavior should be defined as “mental illness”?
Third, the phrase is overly didactic. A scientist is not an educator but an interpreter. The true role of a scientist is to observe and interpret natural phenomena, and the moment one advances a particular belief as “the correct path,” the scientist departs from the essence of science and becomes closer to a moralist or a teacher.
Given that Einstein is one of the most respected and famous scientists, it seems difficult to imagine such a phrase ever coming from him.
